Home Security Systems 101 - What Are Your Options?
Researching home security systems? More and more homeowners are installing a security system for their home as times get tougher and criminals get more desperate.
Home invasions, burglaries, kidnapping, fires, carbon monoxide and even surveillance for nannies or elderly care givers are some of the reasons people turn to home security alarms.
According to the latest Crime in the United States report issued by the FBI, a thief enters a home every 14 seconds.
An amazing 60 percent of these homes are occupied at the time of the break in. And even more worrisome is that almost 40 percent of the burglars are carrying a firearm with them.
But you can help to avoid becoming a victim by securing your home with the right protection system. Home security systems have progressed a long way since the old days of a keypad at the front door and a flashing siren alarm.
But there are so many options to choose from today, it can be overwhelming to decide what you need. Where do you start?
Here are a few examples of what you can get in home security systems:
1) A general home alarm or siren that sounds when a window or door has been opened
2) Same as above with the addition of a fire alarm that sounds when a fire is detected
3) A general home alarm with 24 hour monitoring. This system signals the security monitoring company who alerts the proper emergency authorities
4) Same as above with the addition of several surveillance cameras you can monitor yourself from home or work
5) A general home alarm with surveillance cameras but no 24 hour monitoring service (you control the system yourself)
Those are some of your basic choices. And each one has their own pros and cons.
For example, a 24 hour monitoring service gives you someone to rely on to call the police or fire department should something happen to your home and you're not there (or you can't reach the phone). However you will pay a montly monitoring fee for this service.
A surveillance system with cameras allows you to monitor different areas in your home including the front and back doors. However, the cameras need to be properly installed and give you enough coverage for proper protection of your home perimeter.
Along with your basic system options, there are also several system add-ons that homeowners can get like 2 way voice communication (where you can talk directly with the monitoring center), remote control arm and disarm, water/flood sensors, carbon monoxide detectors and parallel cellular connection (which has cell access to the monitoring stations in case your regular phone line goes out).
Basically no matter what your home looks like - whether you're renting a condo, securing a summer home or protecting a large single family home, you can find a security system that will give the right protection for you.
But before you decide on anything, it's important to take the time to do your research first and decide on what fits your needs best. That's the best way to protect yourself and your family.
